Sizzling, Two-Fisted Progressive Power Trio
Blimey! What a Blast!
So, there are these three dudes in Central Illinois, USA, somewhere, not sure where- maybe Pekin.
The two shorter dudes look like somebodies favorite, slightly cynical uncles. The taller guy might be a giant, like that one in Harry Potter.
But Holy Smokes Can They Rock!
Far as I can tell, this is The Truth Council‘s debut release- but it CAN’T be created by some rock and roll newbies.
Way too much flash, sizzle, and moxie. Way too much savvy and attitude. Walls of gutsy guitar sound, punchy round-wound bass guitar, pummeling drums.
Much too catchy choruses, clean and clear vocals, tasty harmonies. Way too cool instrumental breakdowns.
Not that Newbies can’t be good…
But the progressive power trio format is a real challenge. It can go so wrong so fast.
You’ve got to have that guitar guy- the one who loves messing with tones, plays clean or dirty, knows how to do the power chords and soaring leads…so they came up with Jason McMichael. Check.
The Bassist
John Massaglia– The bass guy has to really lay it on, know when to step up, when to back up, when to punch, when to roar. There are going to be guitar breaks that guy has to support, yet has to help propel the tune along. Sometimes the unison lines make or break the track.
He’s got to work with the drummer and make things fiery, together, find the pocket.
Check.
Could Be the Drummer and Bass Guy are Related
Making this a family endeavor, sort of.
No matter. The drummer has got to have some chops- the fills, the touch, the power and the polish.
Drummer person, giant or not, has to keep the machinery moving and in check, yet with some flash and sparkle.
Check-mate.
OK, Fine. What About the Tunes?
Well, here’s a taste:
YOU know- the massive guitar chords, punchy bass, driving drums. The catchy ear-worm chorus. The clean, clear vocals (and some pretty nice back-up harmonies from Joey Prater).
Crisp, rocking instrumental breakdown with furious lead guitar, backed by mean riffs, bass and drums cooking.
The WORKS.
Lyrics
These are part of the total package. My read on all the lyrics throughout this EP is that they recognize darkness and light in the human heart and human experience.
They have enough poetry and mystery to make them count.
It’d be worth publishing these, and I hope The Truth Council will consider putting music and lyrics on BANDCAMP.
My Conclusion
So. Much. Fun. Great progressive power trio music with pizzazz and zip, punch and power and grit.
More, please!
